Best Performing Cameras And Gear

Be sure to check this post from time to time, as I’ll be updating and expanding it as new equipment is released and reviewed.  I’m going to break this down into 2 sections: Absolute Best and Best Value.  Absolute Best is in my professional opinion, the best item (most features for the best price) you could purchase, with Best Value being the best you could purchase at a lower price point.

Best Point And Shoot Cameras

Absolute Best

Sony DSCRX10/B Cybershot 20.2 MP

First and foremost, why is this the “Absolute Best?”

  1. Priced just under $800, it can completely replace a DSLR camera and all the lenses and gear that you have to tote around, in a small, convenient package without giving up the features.  Yes, it’s on the higher end of point and shoot camera prices, but for the quality of lens (Carl Zeiss f2.8 zoom) and a full 1″ sensor, it’s worth every penny.  As a professional photographer, when I travel, I’m extremely happy to leave all my pro DSLR bodies and lenses at home and carry this camera.
  2. A versatile Carl Zeiss zoom lens featuring a f/2.8 lens, which provides a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-200mm.  That’s a lot of lens with an amazing wide open aperture (at all focal lengths), letting you shoot well  in all situations, even low light (indoors).  This is a profession quality lens on a point and shoot camera.  It doesn’t get any better!
  3. A 20.2 megapixel 1″ Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the RX10 is able to record high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with especially notable low-light quality and a native sensitivity range of ISO 125 to12800. The back-illuminated design of the sensor enables this broad sensitivity range and, with the aid of the image processor, achieves well-detailed imagery with minimal noise to better support working in dimly lit conditions.

Best Value With The Most Features

Nikon Coolpix S9900

Priced around $275, this is an amazing, full featured pocket camera. The black COOLPIX S9900 Digital Camera from Nikon features a 16MP 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor for high-resolution imagery and full HD 1080p videos at 30 fps. The 30x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 25-750mm for a wide-angle to telephoto zoom range. The lens can be further zoomed using the 60x Dynamic Fine Zoom that effectively doubles your reach. The lens also features Vibration Reduction to help reduce the appearance of camera shake when shooting at the longer zoom lengths or with longer shutter speeds. A 3″ 921k-dot vari-angle LCD screen allows you to compose images from unique angles, as well as review your shots and navigate menus.

As I said in a previous post, if I could only have one camera to carry around, and money was “somewhat” of an issue, it would be this one.  It’s an outstanding camera, fully featured, at a great price!

Best Value (best camera on a serious budget)

Nikon Coolpix L340

If cost is your primary concern, for less than $150, it’s hard to beat this camera.  The Nikon Coolpix L340 is a new bridge camera which features a 28x optical zoom, which gives you an equivalent of 22.5-630mm in 35mm terms. There’s also a 56x Dynamic Fine Zoom available, which is a type of digital zoom. Inside the L340 is a 20.4 million pixel CCD sensor. Other specifications include 720p video recording, High Performance VR (Vibration Reduction), a variety of automatic and scene shooting modes and a three-inch 460k-dot LCD screen.
